In 2015, a group of researchers reported that glyphosate, the active chemical ingredient in the weed-killing lawn treatment Roundup, is likely to cause cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In 2017, more than 800 people sued Monsanto, the company that produces Roundup, and that number has now climbed into the thousands. Roundup lawsuits continue to pop up and a growing number of consumers are claiming that the company has not provided enough warning regarding the health risks posed by the popular weed-killer, but the company continues to deny that glyphosate causes cancer.
First Cancer Lawsuit Against Monsanto Goes to Court
Dewayne Johnson is the first claimant to be given a trial. Johnson lives in the San Francisco area with his 2 children and has spent years working in pest control for the county’s public schools. During his tenure, he used Roundup between 20 and 30 times each year to treat weeds on various school properties, and the large majority of his body is now covered in cancerous lesions.
Part of the reason Johnson’s case is going to trial is that he is quickly approaching death, which qualifies him to receive an accelerated trial in the state of California. This will give the courts a chance to review his claims and it will set a crucial precedent for all other cases involving claims against Monsanto.
