Dangers of the Drug Lisinopril
What Is Lisinopril?
Lisinopril (also called by brand names Zestril and Prinivil) is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibiting drug used to remedy congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. It works in part by reducing the body’s ability to absorb more salt than necessary, which can lead to excess fluid retention, making it more difficult for the circulatory vessels and heart to pump blood and nutrients efficiently throughout the body.
Risks of Taking Lisinopril
Despite its effectiveness in curbing salt retention and improving blood pressure, Lisinopril has been known to cause liver damage. Recent cases have revealed that the drug is directly responsible for liver destruction in several patients, and it is reported to have caused liver failure multiple near-death episodes for patients. However, its labeling only suggest that it may cause liver damage, with no mention of the potential for acute liver failure (ACF).
If you are taking Lisinopril, Zestril, or Prinivil, you may be experiencing drug-induced hematic failure if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Dark urine
- Stomach pain
ACF may develop within 8 weeks of the onset of symptoms of liver damage, at which point patients may experience cognitive issues and a decrease in brain function due to the liver’s decreased ability to extract toxins from the blood.
Lisinopril may also be to blame for chronic hepatitis.
What to Do if You Have Experienced Liver Damage Due to Lisinopril
You may be able to recover compensation if you have been taking Lisinopril, Zestril, and Prinivil and you have experienced liver damage, liver failure, or any other related complications. Drug manufacturers have a duty to make sure their products are safe for consumers before putting them on the market for patient use. When they fail to do so, you may be able to hold them responsible for their negligence and demand appropriate compensation for your injuries.
