Share the Road This Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. With more than half of all motorcycle accidents involving another motor vehicle, motorcycle safety does not only concern riders. To keep our roads safe and prevent accidents, all drivers should share the road.

The Importance of Sharing the Road

When motorists tailgate motorcycle riders or fail to check for riders in their blind spot, the resulting accident is pretty well always going to be more devastating for the rider due to the minimal protection that motorcycles provide. In fact, accidents are rarely minor when motorcycles are involved because riders are so easily thrown from their bikes and/or crushed by vehicles. Road rash, broken bones, brain injuries, and other severe injuries are almost expected for the rider. By sharing the road, you can save a rider from serious injury and help them get home safely.

How to Share the Road with Motorcycle Riders

Sharing the road is not difficult. All it takes is extra attention and care:

  • Check your blind spot for motorcyclists before turning or changing lanes.
  • Leave ample room between your vehicle and motorcyclists.
  • Yield the right of way to motorcyclists, when applicable.
  • Don’t cut off motorcyclists.
  • Don’t attempt to pass motorcyclists unsafely.
  • Don’t engage in road rage.
  • Refrain from reckless and distracted driving.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash in Mississippi, our team at Richard Schwartz & Associates Injury Lawyers, P.A. will help you hold the at-fault party liable. We know financial compensation cannot change what happened. It can, however, make the difference between getting the medical care you need and suffering financial debt in addition to physical and mental pain. Our attorney team will fight to win you compensation for your damages so you can get back to your life.
