Common & Unsafe Driving Practices

When a Mississippi resident turns fifteen, he or she becomes eligible to receive his or her drivers’ permit; after one year, the driver is then eligible to receive his or her provisional drivers’ licenses and then at age seventeen he or she gets their regular drivers’ license. Unfortunately, for some people, proper driving etiquette leaves as soon as the license test is over, and that’s when the following unsafe driving practices become constant problems for many drivers.

Lane Changes in Intersections

In Mississippi, changing lanes in the middle of an intersection is not only dangerous but a traffic infraction. Despite this rule, plenty of people make unsafe lane changes while passing through a light. Lane changes in the middle of an intersection are so dangerous because drivers who are perpendicular to the flow of traffic may pull out into a “clear” lane in which someone is attempting to change into. Unfortunately, these unsafe lane changes can result in t-bone accidents and other severe crashes.

Forgetting About Blind Spots

Blind spots are one of the leading causes of traffic accidents because people get lazy or forget to check for other drivers one lane over. Many people observe their mirrors and make lane changes without ever looking over their shoulder to check for drivers in their blind spot. This can result in side-swipe accidents that may push the innocent party into oncoming traffic or off of the road.

Distracted Driving

Although distracted driving is known to cause tens of thousands of car accidents every year, people still choose to take out their phone or accomplish some form of personal grooming while behind the wheel. These people are not only a danger to themselves, but their poor habits can lead to serious rear-end accidents that result in nasty cases of whiplash. Unfortunately, people will continue to drive while distracted despite the known dangers of such actions.
